They traveled from the East to Jerusalem following his star (Matthew 2:2). When they finally found where the child was his mother Mary were staying, they bowed down and worshiped Jesus. They opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of frankincense and myrrh (Matthew 2:10-11).

These valuable items were used to honor a king in the ancient world. However, scholars say that these three gifts also contain a special symbolism about Jesus.

Gold is a symbol of kingship and its glory and dignity. Gold is also an unchanging metal which represents the characteristic of truth. The gift of gold to baby Jesus symbolizes his kingship as the king of Truth.

Frankincense represents Jesus' priestly role giving sacrifice to God. Frankincense was the most popular incense used by priests -Jesus was born as a high priest who offered the best offering to God, the ultimate sacrifice of life and love.

Myrrh is a prefiguring of his suffering and death. He was embalmed in myrrh (John 19:39). It also has the symbolic meaning of the eternal life and his resurrection. Women with myrrh came to visit Jesus' tomb the next morning, only to find it empty! Jesus is the true Messiah who gave us eternal life through his death and resurrection.

Although His own people couldn't recognize the birth of their true king (John 1:11) , there were godly people who still found him and worshiped him with these meaningful gifts.

Let us also give worship and recognize Jesus as the king of Truth, the high priest of love and the Christ who gives us eternal life!
